HAPPY JULY 4!
As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we take a moment to remember that our liberties are a gift. The ability to worship freely, speak our minds, raise our families as we choose, and gather with friends and loved ones is worth cherishing and protecting.
America isn't just the greatest country in the world; it is the greatest nation in the history of the world because it was founded on the enduring principles of freedom, self-government, and God-given rights. Those ideals have made our nation a beacon of hope and opportunity for people across the globe.
This week, the United States Supreme Court delivered a major victory for women and girls across America. In a 6-3 decision, the Court upheld state laws protecting women's sports. This decision stems from Little v. Hecox and West Virginia v. B.P.J., two critical cases that dealt with legal challenges brought against Idaho and West Virginia's laws ensuring fairness for female athletes.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh stated that, "consistent with Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause, we hold that the States may maintain women's and girls' sports for biological females," a conclusion I strongly agree with. As a physician, I know that biology matters. Men and women are different. No amount of medication or hormone therapy eliminates the physical advantages that biological males have in strength, speed, and endurance, which places them at a competitive advantage over female athletes and imposes physical risks to their safety. I believe that the differences between men and women do not just affect competition but also create real safety concerns for our children. Women's athletics exist to provide female athletes with a fair opportunity to compete, earn scholarships, and succeed. When biological males compete in these sports, those opportunities are diminished for girls and women, which Title IX was originally established to protect.
On the House floor this Congress, I have been a proud supporter of legislation like H.R. 28, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025, which amends Title IX to protect the law's original intent and preserve the integrity of women's athletics. It strengthens necessary protections, ensures a level playing field for female athletes, and safeguards the law from current and future radical regulatory schemes.
VICTIMS' FAMILIES TESTIFY ON CONSEQUENCES OF SANCTUARY CITY POLICIES
Secondly, I'd like to highlight an important hearing this past week in the House Judiciary Committee that examined how sanctuary city policies, specifically in states like Illinois and California, endanger communities by putting the interests of criminal illegal aliens ahead of the American people. The reality is that families are grieving the loss of loved ones as a result of one of the worst border crises in American history, and communities across our homeland have been forced to bear the costs of policies that put politics ahead of public safety. And this week, we were yet again reminded of those real-world consequences.
Sheridan Gorman was a vibrant 18-year-old freshman at Loyola University. Now, her family is grieving a tragic and senseless loss, as her life was taken as a result of dangerous sanctuary city policies. Katie Abraham was riding with friends in Urbana, Illinois. Their vehicle was stopped at a red light; they were obeying the law. And in a matter of seconds, an intoxicated illegal alien driving at nearly 80 miles per hour crashed into the back of their vehicle. The stories of victims such as Katie Abraham, Sheridan Gorman, Laken Riley, and many more serve as painful reminders that sanctuary city and failed border policies are not okay.
Sheridan's mother and Katie's father were among the witnesses at this week's hearing, where they shared the heartbreaking impact sanctuary policies have had on their families. Their testimony underscored the devastating human cost of jurisdictions that continue to prioritize the interests of criminal illegal aliens over the safety and security of the American people. Continuing to reward these sanctuary cities with federal tax dollars is unacceptable and undermines the rule of law.
During the hearing, my colleagues and I questioned Democrats' refusal to denounce their cities' reckless sanctuary policies, which prohibit law enforcement and other public safety officials from sharing critical information with the federal government about criminal illegal aliens in custody or transferring them to ICE in a secure setting. For the parents of Sheridan Gorman, Katie Abraham, and so many other victims, accountability is all they are asking for. That accountability begins with acknowledging that dangerous sanctuary city policies have contributed to the needless deaths of Americans and holding both criminal illegal aliens and the leaders of Democrat-run states who continue to enforce these policies accountable for their actions.
We must continue to build upon the Trump Administration's efforts to curb illegal migration and ensure taxpayer funds are not assisting it. Sanctuary policies undermine federal immigration law, endanger public safety, and threaten national security.
