HOLDING FRAUDSTERS ACCOUNTABLE AND PROTECTING AMERICAN TAXPAYERS
Government fraud is not a victimless crime. Every dollar stolen from a taxpayer-funded program is a dollar taken from hardworking Americans and families. A recent report from Open the Books revealed that more than $225 million in taxpayer dollars was stolen through fraud in our nation's public school system over a seven-year period. Even more troubling, only 30 percent of those stolen funds, approximately $67 million, were recovered through restitution.
These findings underscore the urgent need for greater transparency, accountability, and stronger safeguards across government programs. We must strengthen fraud investigations and give prosecutors the tools to hold offenders accountable. For example, when the federal government sends taxpayer dollars to states to administer SNAP benefits, there is often little visibility into who ultimately receives them. This lack of oversight creates opportunities for fraud and allows ineligible individuals, including illegal aliens, to take advantage of programs intended to help Americans in need. This abuse undermines public trust and diverts critical resources away from those who need them most.
I applaud Governor Mike Kehoe for standing alongside Vice President JD Vance and House Republicans in the fight against widespread fraud in government services. Together, we are working to root out abuse, hold criminals accountable, and ensure taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly.
Missourians work too hard to have their tax dollars stolen by fraudsters. I will continue fighting in Congress to strengthen oversight, protect the integrity of government programs, and ensure those who exploit American taxpayers face consequences.
