SECRETARY MCMAHON IN ED & WORKFORCE

This week in the Education and Workforce Committee, Secretary Linda McMahon testified in a hearing titled "Examining the Policies and Priorities of the Department of Education." The discussion highlighted what's needed for the future generations of America and the importance of expanding opportunities for students and families.

I emphasized that today, many Democrats and their teacher union allies continue to oppose policies that would expand educational opportunities for students. Policies that put the students' needs first, such as education savings accounts, charter schools, open enrollment, and even homeschooling, continue to face opposition from the left and powerful teacher unions.

Also, I spoke about how the Democrats accuse Republicans of segregating minority students into failing schools while simultaneously defending a public school monopoly that has too often produced poor outcomes and troubling statistics. Families deserve real options, and students deserve the opportunity to succeed regardless of their ZIP code.

Under Secretary McMahon's leadership, she has pushed back against the one-size-fits-all mentality embraced by Democrats and has held radical teacher unions accountable while advancing reforms aimed at improving educational outcomes. Alongside House Republicans and the Trump Administration, the Department of Education is working to combat the woke DEI agenda, hold colleges accountable for artificially inflating the cost of attendance, and refocus schools on academic achievement by ensuring students are reading again.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA: THE DANGEROUS CONSEQUENCES OF SANCTUARY POLICIES

This week in the Judiciary Committee, we examined the real-world consequences of sanctuary jurisdictions and the devastating impact these policies have on American families.

Stephanie Minter was a beloved daughter and a friend to many in her community. Her life was tragically taken by an illegal alien, Abdul Jalloh, who had more than 40 prior charges in Fairfax County. Her story is heartbreaking, but sadly, it is not unique.

Stephanie Minter. Laken Riley. Jocelyn Nungaray. Rachel Morin. Kayla Hamilton. These are not just headlines or statistics. They were daughters, friends, and deeply loved human beings whose lives were cut far too short.

Americans deserve policies that prioritize the safety of their children, their neighborhoods, and the people they love most. Sanctuary policies undermine federal immigration law, weaken public safety, and too often allow dangerous criminals to remain in communities instead of being removed from the country.

I highlighted how sanctuary jurisdictions routinely refuse to honor Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers, resulting in criminal aliens being released back onto the streets. According to ICE data, sanctuary jurisdictions have declined at least 41,085 detainers since October 2022. In New York alone, nearly 7,000 criminal aliens were released in just ten months in 2025 after ICE detainers were not honored. Reported offenses tied to those released included homicides, assaults, burglaries, robberies, weapons offenses, drug crimes, and sexual predatory offenses.

The American people want leaders who put public safety first before tragedy strikes, not after. Republicans remain committed to ensuring federal law is enforced, communities are protected, and taxpayer dollars are not used to reward jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with immigration enforcement.
